BRIGADE TRAILS TO WINE TRAILS

DURING THE LAST WEEK OF AUGUST 2012, THE OKANAGAN BRIGADE SOCIETY WILL BE HOSTING VOYAGEURS FROM ACROSS WESTERN CANADA, THE NORTH WEST UNITED STATES, AND POSSIBLY FROM AS FAR AWAY AS EUROPE AND AUSTRALIA.

BASE CAMP FOR THE FIRST TWO DAYS OF THE BRIGADE WILL BE AT THE HISTORIC O’KEEFE RANCH. ENTERTAINMENT WILL INCLUDE STORY TELLING BY LOCAL HISTORICAL STORY TELLERS. THE FIRST DAY’S ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE WARM UP PADDLES ON WOOD LAKE AND KALAMALKA LAKE.

THE OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF 15 TO 20, 24 FOOT LONG VOYAGEUR CANOES WILL OCCUR AT THE HEAD OF LAKE OKANAGAN (NEAR VERNON) ON AUGUST 27TH.OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS THE BRIGADE WILL TRAVEL THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE LAKES TO OKANAGAN FALLS. AFTER A WELCOMING CEREMONY, THE CANOES WILL BE PORTAGED TO SKAHA LAKE (SOUTH PENTICTON.) THE VOYAGEURS WILL PADDLE THE LENGTH OF SKAHA LAKE TO THE FINAL DESTINATION, OKANAGAN FALLS.

EACH CANOE WILL BE PADDLED BY 6 TO 12 VOYAGEURS. DURING THE BRIGADE, PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT THE RICH HISTORY OF THE OKANAGAN FIRST NATIONS PEOPLE, THE OKANAGAN FUR BRIGADE TRAIL, AND THE EARLY RANCHING HISTORY OF THE VALLEY.

THE VOYAGEURS WILL BE IMPRESSED BY THE BEAUTY OF THE OKANAGAN VALLEY. AFTER PADDLING, THERE WILL BE AMPLE TIME TO SAVOUR FRESH PRODUCE FROM LOCAL FRUIT STANDS AND SAMPLE AWARD WINNING WINES FROM LOCAL WINERIES.
